James

I am now entering my 7th week in Madrid! How time flies when you’re having fun! The first month I was struggling a little and it took longer than expected for me to settle into life in Spain. However, now I am much more relaxed and I am beginning to enjoy my time here and in particular the last two weeks.

So much has happened since my last blog post. I have continued with the school support, English lessons and free time activities with Creando Huellas. I have now amassed an endless amount of drawings and small gifts from the young people I teach. The English lessons are going well and I feel everybody has made good progress thus far and have all shown signs of improvement since. On the 21st of February I took part in a local carnival with hundreds of people within Vallecas. The parade was highlighting the importance of the environment and climate change emergency. An extremely noisey, colourful, energetic and enjoyable event! I have never experienced anything like it in my life..the community spirit and support was immense!

The week beginning Monday the 24th of February myself and the other volunteers from Madrid took part in ESC on arrival training in Benicassim. This has probably been the highlight of my time in Spain so far! We made a lot of new friends from all over Europe and it was incredible how close the group became in such a short period of time. The week was packed with activities and information sessions. However,  getting up early to watch the sun rise, playing volleyball on the beach to a group of 26 people taking over a local night club! These are the memories and stories I will remember from my week in Benicassim. I just hope that I can keep in contact with the volunteers from the weeks training who don’t stay in Madrid and that we can meet up with them in the future.

Next week I will be returning home for a short break to visit family and I will also be travelling to New York! Although I am looking forward to this I can’t wait to get back and enjoy the remaining months of my European volunteering project.

Until next time!

James

¡Hola!

Hola! It has now been just over a month since I first arrived in Spain to undergo my volunteering journey with Creando Huellas. After a dramatic first few weeks things are now much more settled and I am beginning to enjoy my experience more! I am starting to get to know people a lot better and feel like I have been part of the team at Creando Huellas for longer than just a month.

The main activities which I have undergone at Creando Huellas are Teaching English first and foremost and also helping with food management. The organisation every Tuesday and Friday collect large quantities of food and distribute it to young people and families who are supported by the entity. Furthermore, I have had the chance to spend a lot of time doing arts and crafts, games and other activities with a very young group of kids who seem to like me….I think hahah! I have been given pictures and other small gifts from the young people and I will make sure I bring these home when I return to Glasgow.

I have also spent some time at Europa Joven in the last few weeks undergoing some personal reflection, goal setting, training and also planning future events. Myself and Abdi who happens to be the other volunteer from Scotland attended an event with Europa Joven to present our volunteering experience so far at an event with over 800 secondary school students. Finally we have also spent time speaking to local bars and restaurants to see if they will host our multi cultural event we are planning for the end of march.

Myself and the other volunteers have visited Toledo and many bars and tourist attractions over the last month and are begging to plan other future trips and activities. I spend a lot of my time at Paddys Irish Tavern near Concha Espina metro where I watch every Celtic game with fellow supporters from Madrid Emerald…It’s like a home from home and I never miss a match.

In general everything has been going well so far but I still haven’t learned to speak spanish yet!!!!

Febrero 2020

Muchas Gracias

My name is James McGuire and I live in Glasgow, Scotland. I am 26 years old and I have returned to Madrid after 2 years to undergo a long term European volunteering experience.

My first week has been intense and has involved a lot of trips to the bank and also the police station! I lost my wallet on the second day while walking in Puerta del Sol. It was an extremely stressful few days…Especially because I had lost money that I had been saving before I arrived and also lost some important cards.

However, I tried to remain positive and didn’t want this to have a negative impact on my time in Madrid. I reported what I had lost to the police which was difficult as my Spanish is not very good but I wanted to challenge myself and try my best. A few days later I was lucky to receive a phone call from the Police saying they had my wallet and everything was still inside. Lucky doesn’t quite cover it!

I then got the chance to finally visit my organisation. Creando Huellas! I love the work they do and recognise its importance to the community. I feel like I will become a valued member of the team who have been extremely supportive and understanding in the early days of my arrival. I have been teaching english to small groups of young people and helping with some other activities.

I would also like to say we have a very good group of volunteers from Scotland, Italy, France and Austria! I cannot wait to get to know everybody more and make the most of this experience we are so lucky to be apart of!

Over the next few months I plan on challenging myself to learn Spanish and integrate into the Spanish way of life and culture. I also hope that I can visit various sporting events and travel across the country and experience more of what Spain has to offer.

Thank you!
